Unit 2 post, My thoughts on standards.


  1. I feel that standards are a great way to ensure that our students get a comprehensive and well-rounded education. I personally moved to several different states when I was younger and experienced several different school environments and curriculums. I think standards are a great way to ensure that our students who may have similar experiences don't fall behind their peers or repeat information. As a teacher, I feel standards are a good way to start building lessons as well. It's nice to have a place to start from and look to when I need to create a unit as well.
  2. I feel that content standards will help my students get a comprehensive education in all their classes, not just mine. However, I feel having strong standards for English will allow them to develop good communication skills and well as excellent reading and writing skills. I feel that standards are well thought out and are achievable for a large portion of the students we will be working with. 
  3. I'm pretty confident that I can break down standards and use them correctly in lesson plans. They seem straightforward enough and it would be easy enough to apply them to different lessons. I'm more nervous about building units around multiple standards because I don't have as much experience as I'd like building units. However, I'm sure over time I'll build those skills and have less difficulty building units as a result.

Reading and literature

I thought the integration of knowledge and ideas for ninth to tenth graders was interesting. I think it would be really fun to have an in-depth discussion on why students thought the author might have intended certain meaning from their work. Especially since literature is so subjective, I want to hear how my students felt about the interpretations they were being taught about the text. I also really liked how our students should be able to pull out and identify pieces that were interpreted from other works. the example given was Shakespeare using biblical references in his plays and sonnets. I think this skill will be very useful for our students once they reach college. It’s very likely that they will have to find relevant pieces of information in texts in order to present them in papers or to find other sources to draw from that might be better.   This identification of original source material will be a very useful skill for them in the future.
